Our March Ape Achiever, Devi

Despite facing unimaginable hardships at a tender age, Devi's journey is a testament to the unwavering dedication of those committed to her well-being.

Devi's early years were marred by tragedy. Like many orangutans, she lived freely in the wild alongside her devoted mother until cruel wildlife smugglers tore her from her natural habitat. The loss of her mother and the trauma of captivity marked the beginning of Devi's tumultuous journey.

Rescued by the Bornean Orangutan Rescue Alliance (BORA) from the clutches of animal traders in East Kalimantan, Devi's fate hung in the balance. She was destined to be sold in a distant city, a fate that would have sealed her separation from her forest home forever. However, fate had other plans for this young orangutan.

A journey to recovery

Under the care of the dedicated team at the BORA Rescue Centre, Devi began her journey of healing. Initially wary of human interaction, her wild nature shone through, a testament to her early upbringing in the forest with her mother.

Despite her initial apprehension, Devi gradually began to trust her caregivers, forging a special bond built on patience and understanding.

With time and gentle encouragement, Devi's fears began to subside, replaced by a newfound sense of security and comfort.

Her ability to construct sleeping nests with ease and her forest survival skills showcased her resilience and learning from her mother, promising a hopeful future for eventual release back into the wild.
