Rickina and Ricko continue to thrive at the YIARI orangutan rehabilitation centre in West Kalimantan
Ricko is becoming more independent and is doing well under the nurturing watch of both his mother and their attentive keepers, His growth is evident as he becomes not only larger but also more energetic!
Rickina had a recent medical check-up, and she is in good health with no signs of specific illnesses detected. However, the veterinary staff noticed she has abnormal malocclusion growth in three of her mandibular teeth, prompting close monitoring. Rickina was also implanted with a contraceptive device, a much-needed step as they prepare to join other orangutans on a forested enclosure.
Ricko is also in robust health with normal dental development for his age. Though some molars have yet to emerge, his progress is promising. Despite initial concerns about Ricko's breastfeeding opportunities, recent observations indicate positive changes. He has also begun to explore independent eating habits, signalling an important developmental breakthrough. Their diet, carefully curated by the orangutan keepers, comprises a variety of fruits, vegetables, and snacks tailored to meet their nutritional needs. However, despite sharing the same menu, there has been no observed food-sharing behaviour between mother and son yet.
The staff plan to move Rickina and Ricko into a one-hectare forested enclosure soon. This will provide the pair with the opportunity to interact in a more natural environment while allowing the staff to observe their behaviour and health closely.
