Robert moves into his new home at the Orangutan Sanctuary

Robert is the first resident to move into the brand new rainforest sanctuary.

This month we welcome Robert to our brand new Orangutan Sanctuary at our SRA rescue centre in North Sumatra. He will spend a few weeks in a transition enclosure to ensure he’s adapting well. He will then be released into the forested sanctuary where he can begin his new life!

Robert was rescued in 2016, from being kept as an illegal family pet. He was fed human food and isolated from other orangutans.

As an adult, Robert is now lacking in vital survival skills, and hasn’t been able to fully adapt to jungle life. Sadly, he can’t be released into the wild.

Robert is the first resident to move into the rainforest sanctuary, which provides a safe and secure space for unreleasable orangutans. Here, they can live a life of dignity, outside of cages and in their natural habitat. They will have the support they need to survive, and will become a crucial part of orangutan conservation. Any offspring they have will be released into the wild for the continuation of this amazing species!

This permanent forest home is thanks to the generosity of Tom and Beverly Magnanti. They funded the sanctuary to honour the memory of their son, Robert 'Randy' Mangnanti.

Randy was very fond of orangutans, and passionate about supporting orangutan conservation. The sanctuary has been named after Randy and his devotion to these beautiful creatures - The Robert 'Randy' Magnanti Orangutan Sanctuary.

We can’t wait to see how Robert settles into his new home. Thank you so much to our amazing supporters for giving Robert a second chance in life!
