Meet Boy, or December APE Achiever!

We have a wonderful update on Boy, a brave orangutan who's been recovering from an injury with the help of our wonderful friends at the Orangutan Foundation.

Boy receiving treatment on his injured finger

Boy has been attending Jungle School and learning vital survival skills in the release training program in the Lamandau Reserve in Borneo. A few months ago, Boy was observed with an injured finger— likely from an encounter with another male orangutan. After receiving initial treatment, the wound reopened, exposing bone. Boy needed some extra care and attention from the team to help re-treat his injury.

Through it all, Boy remained incredibly calm and showed no signs of stress. He continued eating well, resting up, and enjoying fun enrichment activities in his enclosure—like the fearless trooper he is!

Thanks to his healthy appetite and strong spirit, Boy’s injury healed well and quickly. He was soon back to his usual energetic self—climbing, playing, and foraging in the forest. 🌳

Boy loves spending hours messing around with Ariel in the forest. Sometimes, he can be reluctant to head back to his enclosure when playtime’s over. We can’t blame him though—forest fun is hard to beat! But after he's had his fill of adventure, he makes his own way home for the night.

Now that his finger has fully healed, Boy is ready for his next big adventure— the wild! Before he heads to his new forest home at Camp Rasak, he’ll undergo a full health check-up to ensure he’s in perfect shape for life in the jungle.

We’re incredibly proud of how strong and resilient Boy has been throughout his recovery. We can’t wait to see him thrive in the wild!

A huge thank you to all of our amazing supporters who help make stories like Boy’s possible. Your generosity helps orangutans like him receive the care they need to heal, grow, and eventually return to their natural homes. You’re making a difference, and we couldn’t do it without you! 🙏

Stay tuned for updates on Boy’s release—we know he’s going to do amazing things in the wild! 🌳
